Day 14 - 22/07/25
Had a brilliant night’s sleep after waking up in my own bedroom. Thankfully Jagan’s toothache and Dan’s food poisoning had cleared up this morning so the 3 amigos were back in action!
There was a cafe in our building, so we each got a banh mi sandwich for 15,000 dong (42p!). Seeing as it was so cheap, the sandwich was basically just bread with some pork and cucumber sporadically spread across the baguette. We got in a cab to go and see this abandoned water park, one of the two tourist attractions in Hue.
It was quite eerie; we were one of the only people there so it felt very abandoned. It was covered with graffiti, and Jagan and Dan were very pleased to see that someone had written BLADES on the wall.
We next got a cab to the 2nd tourist attraction in Hue, the Imperial City. After paying 200,000 dong (ripoff) we were inside. The place was beautiful but after growing up around the British monarchy, the Vietnamese monarchy didn’t seem like much! Regardless, the buildings were stunning and the history was even more interesting.
We were exhausted from walking around all day in the humidity, so we stopped for a banh mi for breakfast. I ordered the most expensive one which was delicious, but somehow left me still a bit hungry.
We headed home for a nap, although I didn’t sleep and instead finished off the beers from the previous night. After the boys were awake and back in action, we headed off to central Hue.
It felt so refreshing to be back in an actual city rather than trekking around the Vietnamese countryside as we had done in Sapa. It was weird to feel more relaxed around the beeping and bright lights than in a serene rice field. Anyway, we stopped off at a restaurant for dinner.
I was sick of eating pho, so I decided to just have spring rolls for dinner. It was brilliant, and before long we were on our way to a billiards bar to play some pool.
As British people, we walked into the building feeling like the dog’s bollocks as we invented the sport, so surely we would be amazing compared to the Vietnamese. Turns out we were sorely mistaken, the locals seemed like actual professionals and we seemed like complete newbies compared to them. After a few games, we headed to get a massage.
Jagan and I opted for a hour long back massage. It must’ve been very good as according to Jagan I was snoring for half of it. After feeling rejuvenated we headed to a nearby bar for some end of evening beers.
The bar had a very aggressive name, but despite this we were still quite sleepy from the massage. We got an uber home to get an early night in preparation for our flight to Saigon the next day!
